Tofu’s Bad Wrap

A lot of people have wrong impressions about tofu – that it’s bland, flavorless, has a terrible texture, and is difficult to cook. These misconceptions are just what they are – misconceptions. You can prove all these wrong if you try and taste tofu. It’s also pretty much easy to cook, as long as you’re familiar with its texture and qualities. And with all the health benefits that it provides, you taking the time to learn how to cook it will be all worth it.

Another misconception is that tofu is just for vegetarians. This is so not true! I can even get my meat’er hubby to eat it! Granted, he’s a goat & eats anything that he can hit with a stick, but that’s beside the point!

Tofu – The Chameleon Protein Of The Non-Meat World

Tofu is a versatile ingredient – it can be cooked into savory dishes or to silky, creamy desserts. Many vegetarians use tofu as substitute to meat and cook it into tofu burger patties, hearty pasta dishes, tofu tenders, and even tofu steak. Vegans often use it as a sub for eggs for breakfast scrambles. Tofu can also be turned into desserts including tofu puddings and tofu pies. Tofu can absorb the flavors you put into it, making it an ingredient of all seasons.

Tofu Stir Fry Is An Easy Place To Start

One of the dishes that highlight tofu’s versatility is the Tofu Stir Fry. This dish is a can’t-miss way to turn a tofu-phobic into a fan! Tofu Stir Fry is flavored with the Asian flavor combination of garlic, onions, ginger, and sesame seeds. It comes with a light, sumptuous sauce made with soy sauce, cooking wine, sesame oil and a little sugar.

Serving Awesomeness For Tofu Stir Fry

Bring true to its Asian flavors, this dish is best served with steamed rice. As a vegetarian, I often find myself going to cheese, pasta, and breads, so I make cauli-rice to try and make it healthier. For people on a diet and would want an extra-healthy side dish, a serving of steamed cabbage or bok choy will go very well with the sweet-sour-salty stir fry. If you’re feeling adventurous, try a sweet twist in flavors by serving with mashed sweet potatoes and sriracha!

Braised Tofu Stir Fry

Ingredients

For the tofu:

  • 2 firm organic tofu
  • 3 tbsp cooking oil
  • 4 to 5 large garlic cloves, peeled & smashed
  • 6 slices of fresh ginger, sliced into matchsticks
  • 6 spring onions, sliced
  • sesame seeds

For the sauce:

  • 3 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Chinese cooking wine
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • ¼ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp cornstarch dissolved in some water

Instructions

  1. Cut the tofu into strips. Place in a colander lined with kitchen towel, to drain.
  2. Mix all the sauce ingredients in a bowl. Set aside.
  3. Heat a large non-stick skillet on high. Add oil once pan is hot. Reduce heat to medium.
  4. Add drained sliced tofu fry for a minute or until very lightly browned on one side. Turn gently with a spatula until all the pieces are very lightly browned on the sides.
  5. Add garlic, ginger and half of the spring onions and stir-fry gently for 2 minutes or until fragrant.
  6. Reduce heat to low, drizzle in the sauce, stir to blend and cover wok with lid. Braise for 5 minutes. If sauce becomes too dry whilst cooking, add a few tablespoons of water.
  7. Before serving, add remaining spring onions and garnish with some sesame seeds. Serve hot with steaming jasmine rice.
